The US warship and multiple commercial ships were attacked in the Red Sea, while Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip intensified. The US Warship, USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, was among the targeted vessels. The Pentagon confirmed the attacks and stated that they would provide more information as it becomes available. Fortunately, the Carney was not damaged, and there were no serious injuries reported.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have been targeting ships in the Red Sea, claimed responsibility for attacking two commercial vessels. However, they did not mention the USS Carney in their statement. The attacks, along with increased clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah near the Lebanon border, could indicate a potential escalation of the conflict in the region, which the Biden administration has been working to prevent.
According to anonymous U.S. officials, the attack began in Sanaa, Yemen, around 10 a.m. and lasted for up to five hours. The USS Carney reportedly intercepted at least one drone during the attack. The Houthis stated that they carried out the operation against two Israeli ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Although the ships were not Israeli-owned, they appeared to have links to Israel. The Houthi military spokesman mentioned that the ships ignored warnings before the attacks.
The war initially started on October 7 when militants from Gaza launched a deadly assault on the Israeli border, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, including many women and children. Israel has reported the loss of nearly 100 soldiers in the subsequent attack on the Palestinian enclave. The Gaza Health Ministry, run by Hamas, claims that over 15,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, and more than 41,000 have been injured.
Vice President Harris has called on Israel to respect international law and cease the killing of innocent Palestinians. The U.S. National Security Council is actively working to bring Israel and Hamas back to the negotiating table, but the timing of such talks remains uncertain. Hamas has reported that over 700 Palestinians were killed within the first 24 hours after the truce ended and fighting resumed, condemning the Israeli occupation forces for committing atrocities throughout Gaza.
In addition, the Ziv Medical Center in Safed, Israel, near the Lebanese border, has admitted 12 individuals wounded in a missile attack by Hezbollah. However, Hezbollah has not fully engaged in the war thus far. The bodies of 31 Palestinians killed in Israeli bombardment were taken to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah, according to an administrative employee named Omar al-Darawi.
The United Nations expresses deep concern over the “brutal resumption of hostilities” in Gaza. Israel’s military, after urging over 1 million Gazans to evacuate the northern region of the enclave, has now ordered additional areas in southern Gaza to be evacuated. This has caused residents to scramble to find safe places to go. The Israeli bombardment has shifted its focus to the south, particularly near Khan Younis, the second-largest city in Gaza. Israeli officials believe that many members of the Hamas military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, have fled the northern region with the evacuees and are now hiding in and around Khan Younis.
Israel’s military Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, stated that they have fought vigorously in the north of the Gaza Strip and will continue to do so in the south. Khan Younis, which was home to over 200,000 people before the war, has become even more densely populated as residents from the north seek refuge in the area.
The UN’s human rights chief, Volker Türk, describes the resumption of hostilities as brutal and emphasizes the devastating impact on civilians. Türk stresses the urgent need to end the violence, as the suffering endured by civilians has become unbearable.
